About the event

Belfast Canoe Club are the only club in Northern Ireland currently offering tuition in the Olympic discipline of kayak racing. We are open to all, but our equipment is not generally suitable for children under 10. Our base at Lough Henney is a uniquely suitable venue for learning to paddle kayaks.

This is an opportunity to try paddling a kayak on placid water. An experienced coach will explain the principles of paddling, appropriate safety precautions, and the different types of kayak available, and provide an hour’s coaching on the water. Those interested will have the opportunity to undertake up to 3 further lessons to reach the standard to join the club.

What’s included

The session is 2 hrs in total with 1 hr on the water. We provide kayaks, paddles, and buoyancy aids.

What to bring

Paddlers should wear light clothing and footwear. Avoid Fleece and other thick absorbent clothing, and trainers with thick soles. Paddlers must have a warm dry change of clothes available including footwear and towel in case of capsize. If you already have a buoyancy aid of your own suitable for kayaking you can use it.
